The new-for-2013 Hyundai Santa Fe is a key model for the Korean company, even if it doesn't sell in the volumes of its more affordable vehicles. Still the company has gone to great lengths to ensure the 2013 Santa Fe builds on the success of its predecessor by updating both the looks and technology package.

What did Hyundai designers use for inspiration?

Well, says Hyundai; "Building on Hyundai’s `Fluidic Sculpture' design philosophy, the exterior of the all-new Santa Fe invokes the impression of irrepressible motion through the model’s unique “Storm Edge” styling, which captures the strong and dynamic images created by nature during the formation of a storm." Sure, OK, but it still looks to have borrowed quite a number of cues from the hugely successful Kia Sportage....

How efficient is the new Santa Fe?

Well there is only one engine option available - a new 2.2-litre 16V turbo diesel which boasts economy numbers of 8l/100km for the FWD and 8.3l/100km for the AWD models. Good for a vehicle of this size certainly, if not exactly ground breaking.

How much power on tap in the new Santa Fe?

The 16-valve R2.2 engine with double overhead camshafts delivers 145 kW at its peak power output at 3 800 r/min., and 436Nm of torque between 1 800 and 2 500 r/min.

What about the transmission?

The turbodiesel delivers its power to the wheels through a smooth-shifting automatic 6-speed transmission that offers the option of manual shift control.

And is it really AWD?

Yep. The all-wheel drive system in the Executive and Elite delivers power through the front wheels under normal road conditions for optimum economy, but engages the rear wheels automatically when conditions demand it. It also features a 4WD lock mode selector that distributes power in a 50:50 ratio to front and rear wheels for increased off-road ability, while automatically switching back to “Auto” mode to protect the drive system when the vehicle speed increases to 40 km/h.

What about Safety?

Six airbags and a full complement of active safety systems as well as a structure more rigid than ever before thanks to the extensive application of high-tensile steel earned the all-new Santa Fe a full house of five stars in the stringent test regimen of the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).

So it's stronger than ever?

Yes, basically. New hot stamping and roll-forming methods have also been applied to impact members that provide added strength, reduce the number of body parts and make the architecture lighter. The amount of structural adhesives has also been increased for improved body rigidity and durability.

And what about inside?

In line with Hyundai’s “Modern Premium” brand direction, the car is literally packed with all the comfort and luxury features you could ask for. Including Dual Zone Climate Control with chilled glove box feature, automatic electric folding mirrors, an automatic rain sensor with speed-sensitive windscreen wipers, and controls for the audio system and cruise control mounted on the wheel. Range-topping Elite models also get 12-way power adjustable drivers' seats, a powered panoramic sunroof, and a rear-view camera which displays its image in the mirror itself, which complements the RPAS (Rear Parking Assist System), commonly known as park-distance control.
